  • Applicability: Where is English ivy an invasive in the United States? It is problematic throughout the eastern United States and in the West where it has taken over habitats from Arizona to Washington.
  • What’s the problem with English ivy?
    • English ivy can smother native plants and steal their water and nutrients.
    • It can also harm trees by blocking sunlight, introducing disease, and strangling them.
    • Ivy’s shallow roots can also exacerbate erosion, especially on slopes.
    • English ivy can even rodents. Its dense thickets provides ideal shelter and nesting locations for rodents like rats and mice.
  • How can English ivy harm salmon?
In short, invasive plants, like English ivy, create an unhealthy environment for salmon by changing their habitat, degrading water quality, and disrupting the food webs salmon rely on. Removing invasives and restoring native plant communities are vital to protecting and recovering salmon populations.

    • Ivy has shallow root systems that are less effective at stabilizing stream banks compared to deep-rooted native plants. This can cause erosion, washing sediment into the water. Sediment can suffocate salmon eggs, make it difficult for salmon fry and alevin to find food, and even clog their gills.
    • Invasive plants outcompete native plants that provide essential food and habitat for salmon and the aquatic insects they feed on.
    • Ivy infestations can prevent native trees from growing. These trees are important sources of large woody debris, which creates important habitat and hiding places for salmon.
